History of the Incorporation of Albers

In the early 1950’s many residents seemed to feel that it would be advantageous for Albers to become a municipality. Meryle T. Schroeder, a Mascoutah attorney, provided legal assistance and Albers was incorporated on July 1, 1945. Pursuant to call by Honorable William Lehrter, Clinton County Judge, the first Village Board meeting was held at St. Bernard’s School Hall on August 31, 1954, at 8:00 p.m., with all elected Village officials present:

Alois Johnson, President
John Kuhl, Trustee
Leroy Hustedde, Clerk
Fred Markus, Trustee
Anthony Dulle, Trustee
Linus Meier, Trustee
Norbert Fuehne, Trustee
Henry Netemeyer, Trustee

At that first meeting in 1954, the Village Board appointed Edgar Netemeyer as Village Treasurer (he still serves in this capacity) and, among other important matters, it passed Ordinance #1, an ordinance pertaining to liquor dealers in the Village.
